Omega-3 (ALA) is one of two essential fatty acids. Omega-6 or linoleic acid (LA) is the other essential fatty acid.
It's Essential because we must get these fats from our diet. Our body does not manufacture omega-3 or omega-6 on its own.
Omega-3 converts to EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) in the body and is classified as a polyunsaturated fat.
Polyunsaturated Fats remain liquid when refrigerated or frozen unlike saturated fats which are solid and monounsaturated fats, like olive oil, which are liquid at room temperature but harden when refrigerated.
The Health Benefits of omega-3's can not be over emphasized! Scientific research has shown that ALA, EPA and DHA help us to prevent diseases such as cancer, heart disease and depression.
Dietary Sources of omega-3's include: cold-water fish, fish oil, flax seeds, flax oil, walnuts, hemp seeds, soybeans and some dark leafy green vegetables.
These Fats can also be obtained from eating certain types of algae containing DHA.
EPA is known for its role in preventing cardiovascular disease and DHA is necessary for proper brain and nerve function.
What About Supplements?
The Truth is that most Americans are eating way too much Omega-6, found in oils and animal foods but not enough Omega-3.
Have You Heard the News? Omega 3 benefits can easily be obtained by taking a high-powered, fish oil supplement derived from greenlip mussels.
Green-lipped Mussels are up to 480 times more effective than other Omega-3 fish oil supplements.
Most Americans are not consuming enough omega-3 essential fatty acids. Even worse, Americans are eating 10 - 20 times too much Omega-6 essential fatty acids which promotes the production of inflammation causing chemicals in the body.
Balance is the Key! The proper ratio, according to most health experts, is around 2:1 omega-6 to omega-3. The problem is that the Standard American Diet (SAD) creates an unhealthy ratio of about 20:1!
Bottom Line...Poor dietary choices and overly-processed foods are creating deficiencies in ALA, EPA and DHA. But the good news is there is an alternative - reduce your intake of overly-processed foods and get the best omega-3 supplement on the planet!..
